As part of my ongoing efforts to analyze digital marketing trends and SEO strategies, I recently conducted an in-depth market research study on the keyword landscape in the Netherlands. The research compares the non-branded keyword positions on Google for five major automotive brands: Tesla, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and BYD.
Key Findings
Using advanced SEO tools and data analysis, I examined the search engine rankings of these brands for 100 high-impact keywords related to electric vehicles, leasing options, insurance, and general automotive searches. The goal was to determine which brands perform best in organic search visibility and where Tesla stands in this competitive landscape.
From the study, Volkswagen leads the market with the highest keyword visibility, followed by Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Tesla lags behind in many key automotive searches, ranking fifth overall, just ahead of BYD. Some of the key terms where Tesla underperforms include:
- “Elektrische auto” (Electric car) – Tesla ranks significantly lower than Volkswagen and Mercedes.
- “Private lease elektrische auto” (Private lease electric car) – BMW and Volkswagen dominate, leaving Tesla with limited visibility.
- “Auto kopen” (Buying a car) – Tesla is not among the top search results, reducing its organic traffic potential.
SEO Recommendations for Tesla
Based on my analysis of Tesla’s performance, I have identified several SEO improvements that could help Tesla enhance its organic search rankings in the Netherlands:
- Optimize hreflang tags: The recent SEO audit highlighted significant issues with incorrect hreflang links on Tesla’s website. Fixing these would improve visibility for Dutch users searching in their native language.
- Enhance internal linking structure: Tesla has multiple broken internal links, which can negatively impact its search rankings and user experience.
- Improve content strategy: Tesla’s website has low-text-to-HTML ratio pages, meaning there is not enough relevant content for Google to index effectively. Adding localized, high-quality content around key search terms could greatly improve rankings.
- Strengthen keyword targeting for Dutch users: Competitors are ranking higher due to better keyword optimization. Tesla should focus on optimizing its pages for high-volume, non-branded keywords like “elektrische voertuigen kopen” (buying electric vehicles) and “goedkoop elektrisch leasen” (affordable electric leasing).
